Sanctuary of the Egyptian Gods, Nea Makri (Brexiza)
The Sanctuary of the Egyptian Gods is an ancient sanctuary and site of archaeological interest located next to the Small Marsh of Brexiza, in today’s Nea Makri.
It is thought to have been built by Herodes Atticus around 160. Herod chose Marathon for the foundation of the sanctuary because it was his place of origin and residence. It is possible that the complex was located within the boundaries of the estate he owned in the area.
The modern archaeological site includes an extensive complex of a sanctuary dedicated to Egyptian gods and a luxurious bath (balaneion) which operated until the 4th century, as well as the large ellipsoidal cistern further south. The sanctuary was built on an artificial islet in the Small Marsh and in the past years it was called “Island”. In 1792, a drawing by the French consul in Athens, Louis S. Fauvell, depicts ancient ruins on an islet in Elos. The sanctuary was dedicated to Sarapis, a Hellenized figure of the god Osiris, and there were celebrated the great festivals of Sarapi and Osiris.
